Promote/Demote activities

If you would like to change the hierarchy of your activity outline, you can do so easily. Just click and drag the the activity to wherever you wish. Notice as you drag your activity up and down your outline that a red line appears whenever you hold the activity between 2 activities, and a purple bar appears whenever you hold your activity directly over another activity. The red line indicates where your activity will be inserted when you drop it, whereas the purple bar highlights the new parent activity of the activity you are currently dragging. So to turn an activity into a sub-activity, just click and drag the activity and drop it directly on top of the activity of your choice.

If you'd prefer to use your keyboard to promote/demote activities, you can do so by using the easy keyboard shortcuts. Simply select the activity of your choice, and hit <ctrl + left/right arrow> to promote/demote an activity, respectively. If you select a root level activity and hit <ctrl+right> that activity will become a sub-activity of the activity immediately above it in the list. To move this new sub-activity back into the root-level, just hit <ctrl+left>. You can also reorder your activities without changing the hierarchical level with the keyboard by hitting <ctrl+up/down>.

Note: If you are editing an activity when you hit <ctrl+left/right> the activity will not be moved. Instead, your cursor will jump to the beginning or end of the adjacent word (as it always does when you are editing text). To get out of edit mode, just hit <enter> and notice that the cursor disappears, while the activity remains selected. Now you can promote/demote your activity as you please.

Note: If your preferences are set such that whenever you click on an activity you go immediately into edit mode, you will have to click on the activity and then hit <enter> to exit edit mode; once you are out of edit mode, you can hit <ctrl+left/right> to promote/demote your activity.

Finally, you can promote or demote activities by right clicking on them and selecting "promote" "demote" or "set as top-level."
